It's that time again. You need to fix those old headlights of yours and believe it or not, you can absolutely do this yourself without a professional at your side.

Of course, you have the option to have your mechanic look at your headlights and fix them up for you for a mere cost of hundreds of dollars, but why do that when you can change them yourself for a mere part of that cost? So make sure to follow these simple rules to fix and revamp your headlights to boost up the look and effectiveness of your car.

Most importantly you must find the main problem. They may not work as brightly as they should, maybe there is water in them, or perhaps they just merely failed inspection? If your headlights completely do not work, they most likely are either burned out or there may be some electrical issue to address. The bulb is the easiest to change since it just unscrews from the rear of the backlight lens.

Look at the bulb to see if it burned out and if it is, you can go to your local store such as Wal-Mart to purchase one for under $20. Put the new bulb in and make sure you don't put your fingers on the glass part since this can cause the bulb to blow or wear even faster than it should. If the headlights still don't work, you may need to see a mechanic due to a mechanical problem.

There may be water present within your headlights because of a hole, leak, or crack. The more modern plastic lenses can simply be just drilled in to let any water come out. Afterwards, just patch the hole with some silicone. Then you need to find the cause of the problem where water is coming through.

Any cracks or holes can be closed up with some silicone or clear sealant such as urethane. If the hole is really large, then it may be time to ultimately change and replace the entire lens.

Lastly, the other issue you may have is a cloudy, yellowish headlight which ultimately can lead to unsafe driving conditions with limited visibility. Today there are kits available at your local store to repair and clean your headlights.

In the past, you would need to change the entire headlight which could be costly but now there are ways to repair and revamp them for a fraction of the cost. So take the time to be safer on the road for yourselves and others by repairing and fixing those old headlights.
